Commercial Resin Pen Blanks = Hacks for PITAs

August 26, 2023
There’s a discreet chip at the bottom near where the resin meets the point. CYA glue and a light touch with the chisel and it’s barely visible.

While hiding from the heat in the basement this and last week, I found a stash of half completed pen sets from a few years back. Usually they were glued up commercial resin blocks, or rather the half that didn’t shatter while being worked so you’d be left with a half pen set.

Disappointing, but that’s life. Commercially sold resin blocks seem to have the handling properties of window glass, one false move and they shatter, or at least chip at inconvenient places like right by the bushing all the way down to the brass tube. Bushing chips can be fixed if it’s a clean break using CYA glue, preferably thin/ultra thin. Apply CYA, fit the chip back in it’s hole, let it cure, turn on.
